Here in Ireland, we are completely obsessed with the weather. We love talking it and often as not, complaining about the rain.
Well, it seems that great American singer and dancer, Gene Kelly was on to something with his iconic tune ‘Singing in the rain’. And considering how much rain we’ve had recently, it’s a very good thing that walking in it can improve our mental health and wellbeing.
While most of us are quite happy to stay indoors and wait for a dry spell, we would be missing out on the health benefits of walking in the rain. So, why should we grab the waterproofs and brave the rain? New research has revealed it’s all about ions.
When it rains negative ions charged with electricity are released and when we breath in these ions they are absorbed into our blood stream causing biochemical changes in the brain that can boost our mood, immune system and even help to reduce depression. There are also loads of these ions near waterfalls, rivers and in waves at the beach.
Plus, the sound and smell of rain stimulates serotonin and helps relax us. With up to 225 days of rain per year in Ireland there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the health benefits of negative ions.
So, embrace the rain and when planning your next hike pick a route that includes a waterfall, river or your favorite beach.
