Inishowen in County Donegal is Ireland’s most northernly peninsula and the kicking off point for the Wild Atlantic Way. The Peninsula is often called ‘Ireland in miniature’ due to its diverse and varied landscape. Scenically beautiful and full of history, the region has a timeless and remote feel that makes it a unique destination. The largest peninsula in Ireland, Inishowen’s dramatic landscape has a wild coastline with easy access to beautiful beaches, quiet countryside and hills a plenty to discover. On foot is one of the best ways to explore the place, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in all this authentic destination has to offer from peaceful trails, wild scenery, a rich cultural heritage and ancient sites. It is easy to get off the beaten path and on most walking routes you are likely to see only sheep, and the great views.
Inishowen is a paradise for walkers with an abundance of walking routes to suit all levels of ability from casual strolls and family walks to more challenging hikes and hill walks. Over recent years the number of marked trails has steady grown due to the wonderful work of North West Community Development. Some of our favourite low level hiking routes include the Bulba Way, Butlers Glen Loop, Inishowen Head and our very own Malin Head Discovery Walk.
Hill walkers are also spoilt for choice with Slieve Snaught, Inishowen’s holy mountain and highest peak and the Urris Hills. Both offer different access routes and levels of challenge. Raghtin More, Inishowen’s second highest peak, is one of our favourite climbs. We like to include the hills of Crockmain and Mamore, more challenging but the decent to Mamore Gap is just glorious and well worth the effort. Regardless of which walking route you chose, the Wild Atlantic Way is your constant companion and the views are panoramic.
