Located in a dramatic location along Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way, this sunset walking tour will explore the fascinating history of Lough Swilly and Fort Dunree as the sun goes down.

Dunree Head is one of the best places in Donegal, and Ireland, for sunsets. And also for seeing the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights as we call them here. Join us on a fascinating journey through time from the end of the last ice age to the arrival of the first settlers, to Dunree becoming the rumoured royal seat of the McLaughlin Clan and a site of strategic and defensive importance during the Napoleonic, First, and Second World Wars. Discover the native flora and fauna of this wild and stunning location.

Don't forget to bring your camera to capture that perfect Irish sunset photo. This walking tour will share the best locations to view the sunset and you will have plenty of time to watch the sun go down. Definitely one of the best things to do in Donegal. If we’re lucky, we may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Join us for a unique opportunity to make memories along this stunning corner of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Special Requirements

Comfortable shoes and a waterproof coat and a warm layer should the weather turn. Don’t forget your camera! This walk includes a path with steep steps which may be slippery in places.

Age Restrictions

Children accompanied by parents are welcome on this tour, must be 12 years or older. We would require a ratio of max 2 children per adult, to ensure proper supervision.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation policy (for scheduled and private tours):

29 days or more before the walk: no cancellation fee
15-28 days before the walk: 50% cancellation fee
8-14 days before the walk: 75% cancellation fee
7 days or less before the walk: 100% cancellation
