Destination Donegal

"Wild is the word that best describes Donegal. Geographically all but cut off from the rest of the Republic by Northern Ireland, the northwesterly county is marked by dramatic landscapes carved out by heavy Atlantic swells and fierce winds – a place where you don’t have to travel very far to be alone."

– National Geographic Traveller, Donegal 2017

Co. Donegal

OUR LOCATION

Solas Ireland Walks and Hikes is based in Inishowen, Co. Donegal, in the North West of the Republic of Ireland. The peninsula of Inishowen is also bounded by the natural borders of Lough Swilly to the west, Lough Foyle to the east and Malin Head, Ireland’s most northernly point, to the North. The dramatic landscape of Inishowen and its people has been shaped and moulded by the wild Atlantic. Scenically beautiful and full of history, the region has a timeless and remote feel that makes it a unique destination. Living on the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean up here in County Donegal, we like to think that we put the ‘wild’ into Wild Atlantic Way. But don’t just take our word for it; Donegal topped the National Geographic Cool List for 2017.

Top Experience

Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the world’s longest and most spectacular touring route at 2,500km or 1600 miles in length. It contours around Ireland’s stunning coastline with scenic wonders, culture and history around every corner, from Malin Head in Inishowen, Co. Donegal to Kinsale in Co. Cork. While it is possible to drive all of the Wild Atlantic Way in about three weeks or so, we recommend experiencing it like a local by getting to know its people, stories and hidden gems. This trip of a life time is best savoured rather than rushed. Many parts of the Wild Atlantic Way are perfect for exploring by foot. So get your hiking boots on and leave the car behind. Feel the the wind in your hair and the spray of the Atlantic on your face. Become one with nature. There is nothing quite like it!
